Tuna

Coming from Raycast

Many everyday launcher workflows have direct Tuna counterparts, but Tuna organizes them around subjects and actions rather than a list of independent commands. Start with search, then move only the workflows you actually use.

The Mental Model

In Raycast In Tuna
Root Search Fuzzy Mode
Actions for a result The action pane; press Tab
Calculator Text Mode
Quicklinks Smart Links
Script Commands The Scripts catalog
Snippets Poof
Clipboard History Clipboard History, plus Shelf for things you intentionally keep
Command aliases and hotkeys Aliases and custom command hotkeys
Store extensions Tuna extensions, with their catalogs and actions

The important difference is Tuna’s command shape: choose a subject, choose an action, and sometimes choose a target. For example, select a file, press Tab, choose Open With…, then select an app. Press → to browse into folders and other browsable results. See How Commands Work for the full model.

Fuzzy Mode is a command query, not a normal text editor. Use Text Mode when you want to enter text, calculate, convert units or currencies, or send text into another action.

Set Up The Launcher First

  1. Complete Tuna’s onboarding and choose the source groups you want searched. You can run Show Onboarding later if you skipped it.
  2. Open Settings → Hotkeys and record a Fuzzy Mode hotkey. Change or disable Raycast’s matching shortcut while testing to avoid a shortcut conflict.
  3. Optionally add a Text Mode hotkey for calculations and text actions.
  4. Open Settings → Sources to enable, disable, and configure the catalogs that contribute results. Use its search when you know the provider, catalog, or item you want.
  5. Launch Tuna, find an app or file, and press Tab to inspect its available actions.

Tuna learns from repeated choices. If you want a mnemonic immediately, select a result and use Assign Alias…. Reserve a custom hotkey for commands where there is no choice left; configure those under Settings → Hotkeys. See Learning, Aliases, and Defaults and Hotkeys and Activation.

If Raycast currently turns a physical key into Hyper, those Hyper combinations already work as Tuna shortcuts while that remapping remains active. Tuna can instead make Caps Lock, Right Option, or Right Command act as Hyper for Tuna features; configure one approach before removing the other.

Move Common Workflows

Quicklinks

Recreate frequently used Quicklinks as Smart Links. A Smart Link is a URL template with one {{input}} placeholder. It can start from the link and ask for text, or receive text through Send to Smart Link…. Tuna does not automatically import Raycast Quicklinks.

Script Commands

Put scripts you want Tuna to discover in ~/Library/Scripts, or add another directory under Settings → Sources → Tuna → Scripts (custom script directories require Pro). Tuna discovers executable and shebang scripts, AppleScript, and several macOS workflow formats. Its optional @tuna.* headers control titles, icons, input, output, and background execution.

Raycast Script Command metadata is not Tuna metadata, so review each script and add Tuna headers where useful instead of expecting a direct import. See Custom Scripts and Script Directories for the supported formats and headers.

Snippets

Tuna does not expand snippets as you type. Use Poof, a separate macOS snippet expander, for that workflow. It supports delimiter and immediate expansion, TOML configuration, template values such as the date or clipboard, and a Raycast snippets importer. Then install the Poof extension from Tuna’s Extension Store to find, paste, create, delete, and edit those snippets from Tuna—bringing the workflow full circle.

Clipboard History

Enable and configure Clipboard History under Settings → Sources → Clipboard. Recent clipboard entries become normal subjects, so you can paste, copy, or send them into another action. Use Shelf for files, text, or background results you intentionally want to keep in a working tray. See Clipboard History and Shelf.

Files

Add folders you revisit to Settings → Sources so their contents appear in Fuzzy Mode. For a one-off search, stage a folder and use Spotlight Search For…; use a Smart Folder for a scoped search you repeat. Finding Files explains when each option fits.

Window Management

Enable Window Management in Settings → Sources, then search for the exact command, such as Left Half or Maximize, or browse the Window Management result. Once a command is working, you can give it a custom hotkey or add it to Combo Mode.

Extensions

Raycast extensions do not run in Tuna. Open Settings → Extension Store to see Tuna extensions, then use Settings → Sources for their catalogs, permissions, and connections. An extension adds subjects and actions to the same command flow instead of opening a separate command environment. See Extensions.

A Practical Migration Order

  1. Set one Fuzzy Mode hotkey and choose the sources you need.
  2. Use Tuna normally for a few days so ranking can learn your choices.
  3. Recreate only your most-used Quicklinks and scripts.
  4. Install Tuna extensions for the services you still need.
  5. Add aliases and direct command hotkeys after the repeated paths become clear.

There is no automatic Raycast settings or extension import. Keeping both apps available during the transition makes it easier to move one workflow at a time and verify its Tuna equivalent before changing the next shortcut.
