Hotkeys and Activation
Activation is how Tuna appears.
The right setup depends on whether you want discovery, direct action, or dictation.
The Common Setup
Most people start with one global hotkey for Fuzzy Mode.
That gives you the classic launcher habit: summon Tuna, find the subject, then keep going.
After that, many people add:
- a Text Mode hotkey for quick calculations and text actions
- a Leader Mode trigger for commands they already know
- a Talk Mode trigger for dictation
Two Kinds Of Trigger
Tuna uses two broad trigger styles.
Hotkey style
Press a global shortcut and Tuna opens in the mode you chose.
This is the easiest place to start.
Modifier style
Some modes can also be driven by holding a modifier instead of pressing a normal shortcut.
This is most useful for:
- Talk Mode when you want push-to-talk dictation
- Leader Mode when you want direct key-chord entry
Talk Mode and Leader Mode cannot share the same modifier-style trigger at the same time, so you have to give them different ones.
Custom Command Hotkeys
Tuna can also assign hotkeys to specific commands, not just to opening a mode.
That means you can bind a known command and run it from anywhere.
This is a good fit when:
- you already know the exact command
- you want one keystroke instead of opening Tuna first
- the command is too specific to deserve a whole Leader path
Choosing A Good Setup
Use mode hotkeys when you still want to see results and choose.
Use Leader Mode when you already know the shape of the command.
Use direct command hotkeys when there is no decision left.
Those are three different speeds for the same system.
Hyper Key
Tuna supports Hyper shortcuts.
Hyper means ⌃+⌥+⇧+⌘ pressed together.
If you already use Raycast, Karabiner, Hammerspoon, or another tool to remap a physical key like Caps Lock to Hyper, Tuna can use those Hyper combinations for its own hotkeys.
Tuna does not currently own the physical-key remap itself.
